More than half of Central Falls estimated nineteen thousand residents identify as Latinos, a tight-knit community that has flourished in the square-mil…

Progreso Latino took part in a very important initiative this summer. We participated in the Central Falls SCOPE Summer School Program. Ramonita Rivera and Carlos Tobon were both Teaching Partners for five weeks in this program.
This program is designed to assist those students which had a difficult time passing some of their core classes during the school year. The program has a twist which makes it fun while learning.
Within this program, there were four different groups. The incoming sixth…

After months of planning the perfect Family Day, Progreso Latino was able to pull off a well attended event at Colt State Park on Saturday, June 6, 2009. A few staff members were unable to attend because of prior engagements or vacations, but those who participated did so in full effect.

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom recently stepped onto the national stage taking a decisive stance on pro-gay rights issues. The San Francisco Chronicle stated, “Newsom asked the Secretary of Commerce and U.S. Census Bureau to recognize same-sex couples in the 2010 Census.” The Census Bureau has stated several times that it will not count same-sex partners as “couples” in the 2010 Census. That decision has irked gay rights advocates who argue proper identification would boost their numbers and p…

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, through its Secretariat of Cultural Diversity in the Church, has become an official 2010 census partner and is urging its 25,000 parishes and missions to encourage census participation. Archbishop José Gomez of San Antonio noted that, “some of the populations we serve tend to normally be undercounted;” other Conference officials cited the importance of an accurate count to the fair allocation of resources and political representation. In contrast to a cal…
