On February 2009, nine eligible unemployed candidates were chosen to participate in a new program: Bilingual Composite Training and Boat Repairing at the New England Tech Campus, funded by Workforce Partnerships of Greater Rhode Island. They thought that it was a good program because they were going to learn a vocational skill that would give them a way of supporting their families with a high paying job in the marine trade industry. Also, since they were going to have a bilingual instructor along with the one from NETECH, they felt that they would have the support they needed in their own language if they were not able to understand the English-speaking instructor.
During fifteen weeks, they learned the complicated process of working with composite material and repairing boats. They learned the multiple uses of composite and even how to build boats with this material.
The graduation was held on Friday June 12th, and these graduates were very proud of their work. They showed us and their families what they have learned and they were very grateful for this opportunity that Progreso and NETECH have given them. Now, their new task is to obtain a job and with the experience and skills that they now possess they are qualified to work in the marine industry.
