Progreso Latino

Rhode Island's Empowerment Agency

Progreso Latino took part in a very important initiative this summer. We participated in the Central Falls SCOPE Summer School Program. Ramonita Rivera and Carlos Tobon were both Teaching Partners for five weeks in this program.

This program is designed to assist those students which had a difficult time passing some of their core classes during the school year. The program has a twist which makes it fun while learning.

Within this program, there were four different groups. The incoming sixth graders were assigned to the “It’s Not Easy Being Green, or is it?” team, which challenged them to learn how they can take part in saving our planet. The students built bridges made from recycled materials and designed “Green Bags” for the fundraising group to sell.

The incoming seventh graders were split into two groups which were “The Culinary Group” whose challenge was to develop a virtual restaurant and learn to manage it, along with other task such as cooking the final brunch for the end of the program celebration. The students learned basic nutrition along with basic math in class.

The other seventh grade group was the “Fun for Fundraising Group” which challenged students to raise money on their own. The students had a weekly movie day in which they charged $1 and sold snacks. They also had a snack cart which offered snacks in the middle of the day. They also raised money by having a car wash. The groups then chose agencies to donate the money to such as: the Providence Animal Rescue League, Women and Infants Hospital and Hasbro’s Children’s Hospital.

The incoming eighth graders were the “Technology” group, which were challenged with developing a weekly newsletter about all of the groups. In order to do this, the students had to interview other students and staff weekly. They also took many pictures and video clips which they then incorporated in their final video.

Every group had an English, Math and Science class. Although many of the students did not see the correlation, the teachers were able to incorporate basic learning into every activity. Students also went on a weekly field trip which helped students put into prospective what they learned that week.

Students learned while having fun. They looked forward to coming to school every day. It was a great experience for all of the teachers, community partners and students. Progreso Latino looks forward to participating in more activities and program with the school district.
